SCHOOLS FUND
Chandlers Field School, West Molesey (Visual Art/Craft)
The school applied for for a contribution towards the cost of commissioning artist, David Bowers (of 'Mosaic Madness'), to work with two year groups to create a large mosaic mural, to be placed on the outside wall close to the school entrance. This will provide a bright and interesting permanent feature for the school, and the timing will coincide with the school's application for a Gold Artsmark Award. All the pupils will provide ideas for the final design. In addition, every child will use mosaic tiles to make an individual photoframe and the staff might join an after-school workshop to make individual mirrors; so the whole school will be involved in the project.
Claygate Primary School (Combined Arts)
The school applied for for a contribution towards the cost of a 4-day residency by Heritage Ceramics for their 'Explore Africa' Week, for the whole school (395 children between the ages of 4 - 11). The aim of the week (part of the school's Global Awareness Initiative) is to teach pupils that Africa consists of many different countries, each of which has its own unique culture and identity. Each year group will learn new skills and techniques, through participating in a range of stimulating activities, including: African drumming; rhythm and dance movements; storytelling and drama involving African tales, legends and myths; West African foods and eating habits; and traditional craft techniques for making coil pots.
St Charles Borromeo R C Primary School, Weybridge (Visual art/crafts)
The school applied for for a contribution towards the cost of a residency by artist, Donagh Curwen, for their International Week in June 2008. Each class will study a different country and participate in a range of arts activities related to them, using a variety of materials and media, eg 3D sculptures from cardboard and mod roc, mask-making, ceramics etc. 262 children will participate, aged 4 - 11 years.

Elmbridge Museum, Weybridge (Drama)
The Museum requested a contribution towards the costs of staging a re-enactment of Edwardian Olympic events, linking the centenary of the 1908 London Olympic Games with the 2008 Beijing Games, as part of the borough's celebration of the handover of the Cultural Olympiad, on 24th August. This grant would cover the actors' fees.
Landskip Organisation, Weybridge/Esher (Visual art/crafts)
The organisation requested a contribution to the costs of an exhibition, called "Muckraking!", to run at Elmbridge Museum from 2nd August - 22nd October 2008. 40 Esher College students, aged 17-18, took part in an archaeological dig on Esher Common in March, as part of the Landskip project. Using the studio and media facilities at the college, they will transform their archaeological finds into artworks (comprising painting, sculpture, graphic art, and literature), to be displayed both in the temporary exhibition space and within the permanent collection, linked by an interactive trail. In addition, a second archaeological dig will take place as part of the Council's "SHOUT!" programme, for 12 children aged 8-11, on 31st July; and their finds will also be artistically transformed, using narrative labels, and incorporated directly into a Museum display case as part of the exhibition. The exhibition will also include a history of the site, and photographs and a video of the whole Landskip project on West End Common.
Riverside Opera, Esher (Music)
The organisation requested a contribution to the costs of a concert by their chorus, with 2 professional guest soloists and piano accompaniment, featuring choruses and arias from opera/operetta, at Holy Trinity Church, Claygate on Saturday 8th November 2008.
Yellow Rose Productions (Drama)
Elaine Hallam (the writer/director/producer behind Yellow Rose Productions) requested a grant to enable her to stage the premiere of a new play, "Babysong", at riverhouse in the autumn. This will be a devised piece, dealing with the themes of immigration, motherhood and disability (employing a disabled actor). It is hoped that the play will have a second run in either the Studio of the Rose Theatre in Kingston, or a London fringe venue, next year. (NB: The production has been postponed until next year, so the grant will not be awarded in this financial year)
PROJECT GRANTS (INDIVIDUALS)
Rebecca Groves (Drama)
Rebecca applied for for a contribution towards the cost of participating in the Youth Music Theatre's production of Terry Pratchett's "Mort", at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in August 2008, as a means of furthering her experience and training in musical theatre. This year she has been cast in a solo role. Rebecca is now a student at the Trinity Laban Foundation, and hopes to share her skills with local children, through holiday playschemes etc next year.
Thomas Marshall (Music)
Tom applied for a contribution towards the cost of participating in a school Music Tour to Italy, 23rd - 30th July 2008, as a means of furthering his performance experience at a high level, and increasing his confidence, on both the guitar and trombone. He will be playing in the concert band, jazz orchestra and guitar ensemble. Thomas has already reached Grade 8 on both instruments and has been placed on Heathside's Gifted and Talented Register.

Claygate Choral Society (Music)
The Society requested an Underwriting Grant towards the cost of their Summer Concert, at Holy Trinity Church, Claygate, on Saturday 14th June, which will feature the premiere of a new oratorio, "Songs of Hope and Creation", by local composer, Andrew Daldorph.
The Ember Choral Society (Music)
The Society requested an Underwriting Grant towards the cost of a Christmas concert comprising Vaughan Williams' "Hodie" and carols by John Rutter, with full orchestra and professional soloists, on Saturday 6th December 2008, at Hinchley Wood School.
Colin Clyde Martin (Drama)
Colin requested an Underwriting Grant towards the cost of putting on a performance of "The Fighter Pilot's Tale", at the Barn Theatre, Molesey, on Saturday 21st June 2008.
Muse and Music (Drama/Musical Theatre)
The Company requested an Underwriting Grant towards the cost of their Christmas revue, "Christmas Boxed" (working title), to be performed at riverhouse barn on 7th December and St George's Church, Esher on 13th December, following a run of 10 performances at the Jermyn Street Theatre, London.
The Ripieno Choir (Music)
The Choir requested an Underwriting Grant towards the cost of a concert of 16th and 17th century choral music, accompanied by an ensemble of cornets and sackbuts, featuring works by Palestrina, Victoria, Schutz and Lassus. This will take place on Saturday 15th November 2008 at All Saints' Church, Weston Green.
Oxshott Choral Society (Music)
The Society requested an Underwriting Grant towards the cost of a spring concert, "Music in May", comprising Haydn's "Creation" and lighter seasonal pieces (a mix of sacred, secular and popular), on Saturday 17th May 2008, at St Andrew's Church, Oakshade Road, Oxshott.
CAPITAL GRANTS
The Barn Theatre, Molesey (Drama)
The Barn's Management Committee requested a contribution towards the cost of purchasing and installing a film projector and DVD equipment, including new speakers, amplifiers and cables, partly to increase and improve the resources available for theatre productions and partly to enable them to establish a Film Club in the building, with separate membership from the theatre.
Cobham Village Hall (Combined Arts)
The Hall's Management Committee requested a contribution towards the cost of replacing the stage curtain and blackout curtains; and purchasing and installing a new lighting bar, with the attendant electrical work necessary to accommodate the improved lighting facilities. The costs will be shared by the Cobham Players, who are one of the main users of the Hall.
The Elmbridge Choir (Music)
The Choir's Management Committee requested a contribution towards the cost of purchasing portable, self-assembly, tiered staging, to accommodate its 100 singers in any venue. They are hoping to hire this equipment out to other groups in the borough, in order to generate additional income in the future.

Burhill Infant School and Nursery, Hersham (Visual Art/Craft)
The school applied for for a contribution towards the cost of commissioning artist, Donagh Curwen, to create a relief panel on the theme of a 'Celebration of Childhood', which links with the school's development into a Children's Centre, serving the needs of children and their families in the local community - the timing coincides with the official opening of the Centre. The project will involve both staff and approx 90 pupils (6-7 year olds), in the design and creation of the piece: they will develop new skills and techniques which can be transferred to other artistic projects. They will also have the satisfaction of collaborating with each other and of being inspired and taught by a professional artist.
Cleves School, Weybridge (Combined Arts)
The school applied for for a contribution towards the cost of their artistic programme for the year, comprising a range of events and visiting authors for Book Week, for the whole school; a residency by metal sculptor, Alison Catchpole, with Year 3; and workshops in African Drumming and music, with Iroko Theatre Company, for Year 6, as part of their Global Awareness initiative. The programme will benefit 600 children between the ages of 7 - 11.
Dance Consortium (4 schools) (Dance)
Four schools (Burhill Infants, Chandlers Field Primary, Cleves, and Esher High) are applying for a contribution towards the cost of a shared dance residency with Bode Lawal of Sakoba African Dance Company, in March 2008. Bode will also run community dance classes for adults, in the evenings. The week-long project will culminate in a public performance, at Cleves, on Thursday 2nd April. 130 children will participate, from Infant to Secondary level, as well as approx.10 adults.
The Orchard School, East Molesey (Combined Arts)
The school applied for for a contribution towards the cost of a problem-solving week on the theme of 'Stories', including a 3-day residency by storyteller, June Peters, during which the children will experience story-making sessions and storytelling workshops, leading to the building of a story nook in each class and a large story tent in the playground. The pupils will be given the problem of designing and making these structures using the 5R learning dispositions : Responsibility, Resilience, Resourceful, Reflective and Reasoning. 200 children, between the ages of 4-7, will benefit from this project.

Elmbridge Arts Council, Walton (Drama)
The organisation requested a contribution towards the cost of their Annual Drama Festival from 3 - 8th March 2008, at Walton Playhouse (part of the first round of the All England Theatre Festival). The grant would primarily be used to employ a professional theatre technician to design and operate sound and lighting for the participant companies
Elmbridge Community Link, Walton (Music)
The organisation requested a contribution towards the costs of monthly music workshops, culminating in 2 performances (at the July Strawberry Tea, and at the Christmas Concert). This year's theme will be the progress of music, from the music hall era to the present day, and will involve acting, dancing, playing instruments, and singing, as well as describing social/historical milestones. The project will run in partnership with the regular Art/Craft workshops, in which ECL members create the costumes and props for the performances.
Love of Learning (Visual Art/Crafts)
Following the success of their "Storytelling" and "Connected Through Art" programmes,the organisation requested a contribution to the costs of running a series of 6 workshops in Elmbridge schools, for children and their parents, from Years 1,2 and 3, exploring the concepts of playing, learning and communicating together, through sharing in craft workshops, making and decorating mirrors. The workshops, entitled "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall", will be led by visual artist, Donagh Curwen, and professional facilitators, and will take place during the spring, summer and autumn terms 2008.
Nimbus Ensemble (Combined Arts)
The Ensemble requested a contribution towards the costs of running a series of 10 2-hour weekly workshops for children (8-12 year olds), continuing the theme of "Art in Music: Music in Art", from April - June 2008, at riverhouse, based on the story "The Moon Ants Law". The emphasis will be on a particular artistic movement (eg Impressionism) which has parallels in both art and music. Each workshop will begin with musical games that get the children thinking about the topic. A piece of music will then be performed by Nimbus as a stimulus for an art workshop, to be led by artist, Corinne Manches. The participants will be able to explore music-making and creative art simultaneously, without previous experience; and to perform, display and record their achievements.

The Singers are requesting an Underwriting Grant towards the cost of their Spring Concert, comprising Brahms' "Liebeslieder Waltzes" with professional piano duettists, and Britten's "Flower Songs", on Saturday 19th April 2008, at St Mary's, Oatlands.
The Vera Fletcher Hall Association (Music/Opera)
The Association requested an Underwriting Grant towards the cost of a season of small-scale opera productions, between March - May 2008: "HMS Pinafore" by Tiramisu Opera (16th March), "Cosi Fan Tutte" by Charles Court Opera (18th April), and "La Boheme" by Commedia Productions (23rd May).

St Charles Borromeo RC Primary School, Wevbridge (Music)
The school applied for for a contribution towards the cost of running a world music-themed Arts Week in the summer term, with musicians from Earthsong. Each class will be introduced to music and instruments from different countries and cultures, and will prepare a musical presentation to share with parents and the whole school in an assembly. This will be complemented by an exhibition of the pupils' art work. A total of 257 children would be involved (the whole school).

The organisation requested a contribution towards the cost of a year-long, borough-wide environmental art project (September 2007 - August 2008), based at riverhouse, led by Weybridge artist, Alistair Grant. Rebecca requested a contribution towards the cost of participating in a Youth Music Theatre Project ("Force 9˝") in Edinburgh, in July/August 2007. The students will be devising and presenting a show with a professional director, which will be performed at the Festival Fringe. We supported her two years ago, when she was suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which gave a great boost to her health and confidence. She has improved sufficiently since, that this time she was able to audition for one of the few places as singer/actor/dancer and was awarded a place at the first audition. Rebecca hopes this practical experience will improve her cv, when applying to study drama/musical theatre at university.

All England Theatre Festival (Drama)
The organisation requested an Underwriting Grant towards the cost of staging the second round of the Festival (the South Division Final), at Walton Playhouse, on 13th May 2007, which will include 2 Elmbridge drama companies and will be organised by the Elmbridge Arts Council. Costs are higher than in previous years because of the hire fee for the Playhouse, and the additional lighting equipment which is required.
Ember Players, Thames Ditton and Walton (Drama)
The organisation requested an Underwriting Grant towards the cost of their production of "The Lady in the Van" by Alan Bennett, at riverhouse, from 30th May to 2nd June 2007, as the fee for hiring an appropriate van has increased their expenditure above their original estimate.
Monkey Theatre, Walton (Drama)
The Company requested an Underwriting Grant towards the cost of a production of 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin', on 10/11th July 2007, riverhouse. Using Robert Browning's poem as the textual starting point, 32 children, between 8 - 12 years, will interpret the story through a variety of ensemble performance techniques, eg physical theatre, choral speaking, dance. The performance will be underscored by live and recorded music and sound, including some original work. Students from Esher College may provide some technical and creative support.
Muse and Music, Thames Ditton, Esher and Walton (Music)
The producer, Kate Winder, requested an Underwriting Grant towards the cost of mounting a professional production of a Christmas revue (working title: 'Christmas Presence'), suitable for a family audience (songs and carols in close harmony, interspersed with excerpts of prose and poetry) for 10 performances at the Jermyn Street Theatre in London, and 2 in Elmbridge (at riverhouse, and at St George's Church, Esher), between 2 - 16th December 2007. The company consists of 6 actors and a musical director.

Cobham Band, Cobham (Music)
The Band requested a contribution towards the cost of purchasing an E flat Tuba, partly to increase and improve their general stock of brass instruments, which, in turn, will improve the quality of music the Band can produce; and partly to assist the development of a very talented young member, who now needs a full-sized 4-valve tuba in order to progress through his Grades, while he plays with the band.
Cobham Players, Cobham (Drama)
The Players are requesting a contribution towards the purchase and erection of a 20' x 18' timber garage, to be used as permanent storage space for props, costumes and equipment, replacing their existing containers (which will be passed on to other amateur dramatic societies in Elmbridge). The Management Committee of the Village Hall is happy with the proposal, which is supported by the Planning Officer, and Planning Permission has been applied for.
Downside & Hatchford Village Hall, Cobham (Film)
The Management Committee of the Hall requested a contribution towards the purchase and installation of a projector, screen, DVD player and associated equipment, in order to complete the refurbishment of the hall and to enable them to set up a regular Film Club, for which there is considerable demand locally.

The Orchard School, East Molesey (Literature)

Orchard School was allocated a Grant towards the cost of their 'BOOK WEEK', which took place in March 2006. The grant, together with parents' contributions to the school fund, helped to pay for visits by storyteller June Peters and author / illustrator Paul Geraghty during a week in which approximately 200 children and 7 staff took part. The school's aims for the project were to develop a love for stories, to develop speaking and listening skills and to develop creativity - aims which were all well met by the end of this stimulating and inspiring week.

Burhill Community Infant School (Puppetry)

The school was allocated a Grant towards the cost of employing Far and Wide Puppet Company to run a participatory storytelling and puppet-making workshop for 90 children (three Year 2 classes), as part of the school's annual Arts Week in November 2005. It was a 2-day event, involving creating the story; making the sets, scenery and puppets, culminating in a performance to the school and parents.
Cleves School (Dance / Drama / Literature)

The school was allocated a Grant towards the cost of two projects in Spring 2006.
1) A week-long Dance Residency for Year 6 with Kala the Arts. As part of their curriculum studies of India each class will learn the meaning of the intricate movements in Indian dance and practice a dance which they will perform to parents at the end of the week. In this way, they will learn to respect and understand the culture.
2) The employment of a range of poets, authors and theatre groups to involve the whole school - 606 children - in Book Week, to promote a love of language, books and reading. Artists invited so far include: Globe Players, Kaye Umansky, Peter Corey, Inno Sorsy, and the Storytent.
Hinchley Wood School (Music)

The school had a contribution towards the cost of a rock music community event, in the form of a "Lads and Dads Weekend", to be run by the Realistic Rock Group (a company of professional musicians who were themselves members of a successful rock band). The weekend will consist of two 5-hour days. In Day One, the participants will be split into instrumental groups: guitars, drums, and bass, to work on specific music skills. In Day Two, everyone will come together to work on performing as a band; they will learn about band dynamics, timings, effects, and the use of professional technical equipment before performing their pieces in a live concert.
The weekend will be aimed at aspiring musicians, whether they have just started learning an instrument, or just always dreamed of playing in a band. Having just been awarded Specialist Music Status and having already established a successful series of Rock workshops within the school, this is a first step in developing a community outreach programme, in this instance specifically aimed at teenage boys and their fathers, encouraging the generations to work together on a fun, creative activity.
Rydens School (Drama)

Rydens School was allocated a contribution towards the cost of a Drama Week in November/December 2005 involving approx 125 students. Professional drama practitioners will work on "A Play in a Day" with KS3 Gifted and Talented students (who will perform to parents and guests at the end of the week), on "Physical Theatre" with GCSE students, on "Brechtian Theatre" with AS-level students and on "Improvisation with Text" with A-level students.
The project links with the KS4 and KS5 curriculum, and offers all the pupils an opportunity to develop their performance skills and to network with the professional theatre industry.
St Matthew's C of E School (Dance)

The school has been awarded a contribution towards the cost of a one-day Indian Dance Workshop with Kala the Arts for 24 Year 2 children in March 2006, enabling the pupils to experience aspects of Indian culture which they would not otherwise encounter in "rural Surrey".
Thames Ditton Infant School (Combined Arts)

The school has been awarded a contribution towards the cost of a series of "Creative Weeks", themed around specific areas of the curriculum and entitled "Take One Picture", "Mother Earth" and "Books Around the World". These celebrations will enable children to develop an awareness of multi-culturalism, the magic of the Natural World, and the importance of 'Feeling Good'. The intention is to work with local artists and craftspeople, including Jenella Richie (felt-making and puppets) and Ruth Wheeler (willow sculpture), on a variety of small projects and to include art, dance, drama and music. The whole school (270 pupils) will be involved.

Elmbridge Arts Council (Drama)

The Arts Council requested a contribution towards the Annual Elmbridge Drama Festival in March 2006, specifically to assist with the fee of the professional technician, to give participating groups an opportunity to extend their technical knowledge and to raise the standard of sound and lighting in their productions.
Elmbridge Junior Music Club (Music)

The Club requested a contribution towards the cost of an interactive, hands-on percussion workshop in February 2006, which will expose children to the many exciting, fun possibilities of creating rhythm and music with household objects. The aim of the Junior Music Club is to encourage children between 6-11 years to hear and learn about as many instruments and musical styles as possible, in the hope that they will develop a life-long love of music.
The In And Out Theatre Company (Drama)

The Company requested a grant towards the cost of providing insurance cover and costumes for their second production - the first live staging of Jeremy Sandford's 'Edna the Inebriate Woman') at Walton Playhouse in April 2006. in which 38 characters are played by a cast of 13. They also need to build out the stage of the Playhouse to create a (removable) thrust stage into the auditorium.

Elmbridge Youth Theatre (Drama)

The EYT requested an Underwriting Grant towards the cost of performances of 'Les Miserables - School Editon', in January 2006, in Walton Playhouse. Because this particular show is 'through-sung', it is the most challenging the company has attempted yet and requires a very experienced Musical Director and professional musicians to support and train the 40 (approx) young people and children who will be performing.

Surrey Integrated Arts Consortium
The Consortium was awarded a grant towards the cost of running weekly 4-hour workshops over a period of 36 weeks, plus 2 field trips led by a professional artist, for people with enduring metal health problems, on the theme of Mental Health and Mental Wealth, with the resulting works being displayed in a showcase exhibition.

The project aided service users of the Walton and Weybridge Advocacy Group, The Joseph Palmer Centre, Molesey, and Project18, Chertsey.
Tamashek Films Limited
Suzanne Porter, a successful local artist, was awarded a small grant towards the post-production costs of her documentary film on Tinariwen - rebel Tuareg musicians in the deserts of Mali - which she has been making over the past three years.

This newly-formed dramatic / musical society requested, and was awarded, a grant towards the costs of underwriting their first production Tonight at Mackey's Lounge at the Playhouse, Walton on Thames.
VENUE ENHANCEMENT
Claygate Village Hall
The Village Hall Association was awarded a grant amounting to 50% of the cost of purchasing and installing a new public address and radio-microphone system to improve sound quality for productions and events and provide a better, more user-frienly interface with hirers' own equipment when required.
Vera Fletcher Hall Association
The Vera Fletcher Hall Association was awarded a substantial grant towards the cost of purchasing and installing new stage flooring to replace the old, unsafe surface, and towards the cost of upgrading and repositioning the hall's sound system to provide greater flexibility.

Jacqueline Banerjee
Jacqueline, a local author, has been awarded a grant towards the cost of publication of her book Literary Surrey which includes a chapter on the Trust's founder R C Sherriff.
Rebecca Groves
Rebecca has been awarded a grant which will enable her to participate in the "Goblin Market" project with Youth Music Theatre UK in Edinburgh later this year. This opportunity will give her experience in playing in a theatre orchestra as 1st Trumpet and of putitng on a musical production from beginning to performance.
Cerian Holland
Cerian has been awarded a bursary to enable her to attend the Eton Choral Course in July. Cerian benefitted greatly from attendance at the course last summer - again supported by a bursary from the Trust - and believes that her participation this year will prepare her well for taking up her Choral Scholarship at Caius College, Oxford.

Ashley C of E Primary School – Walton on Thames
Ashley C of E Primary School was allocated a contribution towards the cost of 26 Year 5 pupils participating in the Lord Mayor of London’s Thames Festival, culminating in a procession on Sunday 19th September. The project consisted of four days of workshops in school, making willow sculpture lanterns of lizards with flicking tongues, and the budget included the cost of materials, costumes, make-up and transport up to London. St James C of E Primary School
The school was awarded a contribution towards the cost of a one-day pottery workshop, comprising three sessions: one each for pupils in Key Stages One and Two, and one for adults (parents, guardians and staff). Apart from the educational and artistic benefits, another purpose of the day was as a public launch for the school’s new Visual Art Suite (and kiln), which was officially opened in July 2004 (funded by the Lottery, the PTA and local businesses) to be a resource for both the school and the local community. The Rosebriars grant was to be used towards the artist’s fees and materials.

The Cobham Band
The Cobham Band were allocated a contribution towards the cost of a new tuba as part of their “Better Brass Appeal”. Their aim is to buy four new tubas.
M10 Theatre Company
The M10 Theatre Company is a new company created by former members of Elmbridge Youth Theatre, to produce contemporary and original works that have not been performed in the area before. They were allocated a contribution towards the costs of their first production: “Cleo, Camping, Emmanuelle and Dick” by Terry Johnson, to be staged at the end of September. The Rosebriars grant would be used specifically for the materials and construction of their set. This would form a collaboration between the company’s young stage designers and professional set builders, which they hope to develop further in the future.
Princess Alice Hospice
The Trustees of the Hospice were allocated a grant to fund a series of 5 concerts for Day Hospice and In-patients during the year September 2004 – August 2005, which will be managed through the “Music in Hospitals” programme.

The Association requested an Underwriting Grant towards the costs of a fully-staged performance of Bizet’s ‘Carmen’ by Commedia Productions on Friday 15th October 2004.
VENUE ENHANCEMENT
The Whiteley Homes Trust
The Trust was allocated a contribution towards the cost of buying a new grand piano for Whiteley Village Hall. The frame of their previous one cracked a few years ago, and they have been using an electronic keyboard, which is not satisfactory. They have now found a suitable replacement piano at a reasonable price.
Elmbridge Museum
The Museum applied for a grant towards the cost of purchasing a “Multi-Media Archival Cabinet”, which is a dedicated archival standard cabinet, to provide safe storage, lockable security and easy access for its 5000 glass plate negatives. These are currently housed in domestic chests of drawers, which are inadequate and compromise the professional standards of collection care at the Museum. Because the Museum’s conservation budget is extremely limited, the Friends have agreed to finance 50% of the costs of the new storage system.
TRAINING BURSARIES
Samantha Deane
Samantha was allocated a bursary towards the costs of undertaking an 8-week professional development placement (November 2004 – January 2005) in set design and construction with the People’s Theatre Company on their new touring production, ‘Bink’. Samantha is a graduate in theatre design from Nottingham Trent University, but her training has been mainly in studio–based paint and prop work. This placement would enable her to improve her practical building skills, to realise her own stage designs.

St Charles Borromeo R C Primary School
The school applied for a contribution towards the cost of an arts week (June 14th), during which artist Donagh Curwen spent a half day with each class. The whole school (252 pupils) participated in activities including glass painting, 3D sculpture, tile making, and working with a variety of media.
Cranmere Primary School
The school applied for a contribution towards the cost of their arts week, during which artist Sue Lines spent four days demonstrating drawing skills to the whole school (210 pupils) and the staff. The intention is to continue the theme of giving the children and their teachers experience in a medium they may not be confident in or do not have the opportunity to use often.
Royal Kent School
The school applied for a contribution towards the cost of an Indian Workshop Day for 38 pupils in Year 4 (8-9 year olds) with Kala Arts in late June/early July, as part of a larger-scale project on India which they have undertaken this year.  Read more...
ANNUAL GRANT AID
Kate McCullach / The Open Doors Ltd
Kate, a resident of Elmbridge, is at the beginning of her career as a Film Producer (with her company Wildgaze Films) and requested a grant towards the post-production costs of her first independent short film, a version of the Saki story “The Open Doors”. She, the writer/director James Rogan and their technical team are using this project as a way of training themselves and developing their careers in the art and business of making films, using a combination of experienced professionals (the principal actors and the Director of Photography).
Weybridge Society of Art
The Society required funds to purchase an outdoor banner to advertise their twice-yearly exhibitions to the general public. The exhibitions are held at the Robert Phillips Gallery, Riverhouse, Walton and at Weybridge Library Hall.
UNDERWRITING GRANTS
Elmbridge Borough Council (Leisure & Cultural Services)
The Arts Development Officer requested an underwriting grant towards the cost of the Stairway in Time Mural Project for Elmbridge Museum, as part of the SHOUT Children’s Activity Programme in August 2004. During a three and a half day art workshop with a prominent local artist, the children produced six painted boards depicting a time line for the lobby and stairwell leading to the museum entrance.
Weybridge and Walton Festival
The Festival requested an underwriting grant towards the cost of a concert of popular classical music in early July, featuring Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by David Juritz. The intention was to open the Dress Rehearsal to local schools, preceded by a short talk on the composer, his works, and the orchestra.

Thomas Marshall
Thomas was allocated a bursary towards the costs of participating in a tour of Spain in July 2004 with the Merton Senior Guitar Ensemble, during which he took part in 3 performances. Thomas is eleven and a very talented guitarist (5 years younger than the rest of the ensemble). He had been invited to join this tour at the expressed wish of the Director of Merton Music, Mr Peter Woodings.
Cerian Holland
Cerian was granted a bursary towards the costs of participating in the Eton Choral Course, in July 2004. Cerian is eighteen and believes that the intensive nature of this course will help her development as a soprano and further her ambition to study for a Music Degree at Cambridge University on a Choral Scholarship. Her ambition is to become a professional classical singer.

St James C of E Primary School has been granted a contribution towards the cost of a cross-curricular arts project, spanning three terms and involving Ashley and Heathside Schools.
Long Ditton Infant and Nursery School
Long Ditton Infant and Nursery School have been granted a contribution towards the cost of three visiting artists, to develop enrichment activities to enhance creativity within the curriculum during an “Arts Month”. The first artist, Serena De La Hey, will develop a live willow sculpture with Year 2, as part of their “Mother, Nature, Designer” theme. This will provide a lasting piece of art, which can be appreciated by the whole school. As part of their work towards a “Healthy School Award”, the school will be inviting Sarah Farnham to develop a mural for the entrance hall, using ‘healthy schools’ as the theme, working with Year 1 pupils. Finally, the school will be inviting author Paul Geraghty to work with the whole school on bringing books and stories to life, as a celebration of “World Book Day”.

Art in the Suburbs
The organisation have been given a grant to produce a publicity booklet with an entry for each local member artist based in Elmbridge, showing an example of their work, and their contact details. These booklets would then be distributed free via businesses, galleries and organisations associated with the arts, as well as by members.
Cobham Players
The Players were allocated funds to purchase a new programmable lighting control system, which will add considerably to the flexibility of their stage lighting. Although the equipment will be owned and maintained by the Players, it may be available for other companies to use under supervision.
Cobham Village Women’s Institute
The Institute celebrated its 70th Anniversary in 2004 and has been invited to contribute its hand-stitched embroidered linen tablecloth, made by members in 1934, for a photographic archive and national exhibition, as part of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes Textile Recording Project (under the auspices of the National Needlework Archive). The Institute was allocated a one-off Grant to cover the costs of cleaning the cloth by specialists at the Royal School of Needlework.
Elmbridge Arts Council
The Arts Council applied for a grant to cover the cost of a professional adjudicator for the Elmbridge Drama Festival. This is the first round of the All-England Drama Festival and involves many local amateur groups whose members benefit greatly from the challenging competition and detailed professional feedback received from the adjudicator.
Elmbridge Community Link
Elmbridge Community Link applied for a grant towards the costs of producing a musical with a modern nativity theme backed by the singers, actors and instrumentalists from the monthly music workshops for teenagers and adults with learning difficulties. The project was facilitated by professional musicians and a drama teacher, alongside the regular team of extremely committed volunteers. The performance took place in December, but the drama and music workshops would continue for a full twelve months (until March 2005). RC Sherriff Rosebriars Trust covered the costs of employing the professional artists.

The Choir requested an Underwriting Grant towards the costs of a concert in November 2004 commemorating the Tercentenary of Marc-Antoine Charpentier, including the perfomance of an unpublished work, Christmas Pastorale.

The Association requested an Underwriting Grant towards the costs of a full-costumed performance of Mozart’s ‘ Cosi Fan Tutte’ by London Opera Players on Friday 19th March.
Walton and Oatlands Choral Society
The Society requested an Underwriting Grant towards the costs of an Easter concert on 27th March 2004, presenting Rossini’s Stabat Mater and John Rutter’s seasonal Palm Fest .

The courses provided an opportunity to learn and play chamber music with students of a similar ability, not possible at school. This also provided concentrated coaching periods not achievable during term time from professional chamber musicians covering a large repertoire.
